SSC Ultimate Aero II
Bugatti may sit alone at the top of the industry in a number of ways, but it isn’t alone in the top-speed chase. Like NASA had the USSR’s space program, Bugatti has Shelby SuperCars to keep it on its toes. After Bugatti set the top-speed record with the original Veyron, SSC came along with its Ultimate Aero to take away its crown. Bugatti has since responded with the Veyron Super Sport, and now the Americans are fighting back with the new SSC Ultimate Aero II, which aims to reclaim the top slot.
For starters, the new Ultimate Aero is powered by a 6.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that pumps out 1,350 horses, all of which will be needed to wring out that 275 mph. Overall, the car weighs just 2,600 pounds, giving it a power-to-weight ratio nearly double that of the Veyron. The question isn’t if this car will break the record… it’s when.
The F1-derived carbon fibre chassis is complemented by a new trick, the world’s first lightweight one-piece carbon-fibre wheel, developed for SSC by Aussie company Carbon Revolution. In fact, there’s carbon-fiber all over the Ultimate Aero II, with the exception of some aluminum bracing for added safety in the event of a crash.
Expected to go on sale late next year, the Aero II will cost £626,000 ($986,000) according to the guys at Top Gear. Meanwhile the original Ultimate Aero record holder is still up for grabs on JamesList for a $1,250,000.
