A bad estimates from a Ferrari driver in Japan led to a chain reaction that ultimately wrecked or destroyed 14 vehicles including eight Ferraris, three Mercedes, a Lamborghini, a Nissan GT-R Skyline and a Toyota Prius, that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The wreck took place Sunday on Chugoku Expressway in Shimonoseki in the country’s south-west. Police say they believe the accident was touched off when one of the drivers lost control trying to overtake a car on a wet and hit the median barrier. He spun across the freeway, and the other cars collided while trying to avoid hitting his car.

The cars involved in the epic smash included at least two Ferrari F430s (one of which was a rare Scuderia variant), two Ferrari 360 Modenas, two Ferrari F355s and a Lamborghini Diablo. There was also a Nissan Skyline GT-R – the only current Japanese supercar – and two Mercedes Benz, while the cheapest involved in the crash was the Toyota Prius hybrid. While most of the 14 vehicles were traveling in the same direction, a Mercedes CL600 headed in the opposite direction was hit by flying parts from the other side of the expressway.
The crash was occurred about 10.15am (local time) on Sunday after the drivers were travelling from Hiroshima to Kyushu. It is thought the crash occurred when the 60-year-old driver of the Ferrari leading the pack lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle. They are then reported to have hit the central reservation before rebounding into the path of the oncoming traffic. They then caused a chain reaction of accidents over several hundred yards as other drivers went around the bend and unable to avoid the accident. The highway was closed for more than six hours while authorities removed the wrecked cars.
Fortunately there were no serious injuries as a result of the multiple car pile up, but the damage to the owners’ wallets could be worth beyond $3 million, according to estimates.
