Mecca in Saudi Arabia is set to become home to the world’s largest hotel. Luxury complex, Abraj Kudai, will have a total area of 4.6 million square feet with twelve towers, 10,000 rooms and 70 restaurants, shopping mall, bus station, plus helipads and a full-size convention center. Designed by architectural firm Dar Al-Handasah, the $3.5 billion site is currently under construction and could be open as early as 2017.

According to Dar Al-Handasah’s website, a ring of 12 towers will rise from a podium just over 2 kilometers from the Masjid al-Ḥaram, Mecca’s holy mosque. Ten of the towers will cater for four-star guests, while the remaining two will be reserved for their most discerning clientele offering five-star amenities. Currently, Las Vegas is home to the world’s largest hotel in terms of the number of guest rooms.
