The shiny pink crocodile-skin Hermes Birkin bag sold at Christie’s International Plc in Hong Kong for HK$1.72 million ($223,000), setting the record for the most expensive bag ever sold at auction. A fuchsia-colored bag that features 18-karat gold detailing and is encrusted with real diamonds was sold to an Asian phone bidder in an auction that saw “fast-paced bidding from start to finish,” Christie’s said in a statement late Monday.
Previously, the record was held by another totally blinged-out diamond and gold handbag that used to belong to Elizabeth Taylor, which sold at Christie’s in New York for $218,500 in 2011.
At the same auction that saw some 300 designer handbags going under the hammer, a shiny black crocodile “Kelly” bag was sold for $145,000, breaking the record for the most expensive “Kelly” bag sold at auction.
Christie’s Handbags and Accessories sale achieved $5.99 million in sales.
