Child Capitol Creek Ranch – Largest Ranch in Aspen Area on Sale for $41 Million

Child Capitol Creek Ranch is the largest ranch for sale in the Aspen area. This wild ranch is available for the sale for the first time in over fifty years, and the sale is conducted by Christie’s International Real Estate affiliate Joshua & Co. The price is $41 million.

The 1,321 acres ranch, just 30 min from Aspen, is nestled in the shadow of Capitol Peak and adjacent to Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area. This working ranch, set against a dramatic backdrop of Haystack Mountain, allows the landowners to continue their ranching traditions while permanently protecting the property’s important wildlife habitat and scenic values. It has three miles of Capitol Creek, over a hundred acres of irrigated ground, dense forests, tons of wildlife, its own, private backdoor access to public lands and trails, and one of the most awe-inspiring settings one can find in western Colorado.

“The Child Property was the first large ranch in the upper valley to be placed under a conservation easement — a move initiated by Bob Child. The 1,500-acre ranch is the subject of a conservation deal with Pitkin County Open Space and Trails and Aspen Valley Land Trust,”said Rancher Steve Child, 63, a longtime resident of the county and the son of former County Commissioner Bob Child, who purchased the ranch in early 1960s.

Since 1969, Child family led the battle against the proposal to turn Haystack into the valley’s fifth and possibly largest ski area, finally convincing Congress to designate the land as wilderness. [Joshua & Co]
