Ferrari Recalls 458 Italia Supercar After High Profile Fires

Ferrari recalled 1,240 of its 458 Italia supercars supercars worth more than £212million because of a design fault which can cause them to burst into flames. Ferrari launched an investigation last month after media reports of fire accidents involving five vehicles in California, Paris, Switzerland, China and one other unnamed location.

A Ferrari spokesperson told CNNMoney.com the luxury supercar is being recalled in order to make modifications to the wheelhouse assembly. In rare instances the heat shield could become deformed, bringing it too close to the exhaust system and igniting, a Ferrari spokesperson said.

Ferrari 458 Italia in Fire

When photographs of burning Ferrari 458 models started to appear on various websites around the world, Ferrari engineers flew to inspect the burnt out cars. Their conclusion was that the cause of these fires could be traced to the adhesive Ferrari had used to hold the rear, inner wheel arch liners in position. The job of these liners is to keep all the road dirt picked up by the wheels from entering the engine compartment but, in extreme cases, the heat from the engine can cause these liners to deform and move closer to the engine, causing the adhesive to catch fire. This soon caused other components to start combusting and this is how several Ferrari 458s have been destroyed by fire.

These liners will be retained using ‘mechanical devices’, rather than glue to stop this from ever happening again. The five cars destroyed by these fires are going to be replaced free of charge by Ferrari, as soon as new cars can be built.

Timepieces commemorating the sport of golf are not new. One name that echoes in every mind on the mention of timepieces celebrating golf is the Omega Constellation Double Eagle series of watches. This year, the popular line has been extended with the introduction of the new 18kt orange gold case model.

Like all of the gold used in OMEGA’s products, orange gold is 18 Ct, meaning that the metal is composed of 75% gold. It has a high copper content (nearly 24%) which contributes to the vivid colour. There is also a trace of platinum which enhances both the hardness of the material and the value of the precious metal.

Powered by the Swiss automatic Omega in-house caliber Co-Axial 389, this timepiece boasts of a black dial with a truncated inverted Clous de Paris motif. The sub-dials stand for the small seconds, a seven-day recorder and 12-hour and 30-minute counters. The hour markers are also fashioned in 18ct orange gold. The New Bentley Continental GT

Bentley will reveal its new and compelling vision of the Continental GT next month with a unique internet reveal. Instead of waiting until the end of September to unveil the new Bentley Continental GT at the 2010 Paris Auto Show, the company has decided to show the vehicle on the web first.

New Bentley Continental GT will have its online debut on September 7, at 15:00 British Summer Time. The week-long public reveal will be hosted at www.ContinentalGT.com with the opportunity for viewers to take several bespoke and virtual tours of the Continental GT by selecting a range of camera angles and distances which are all designed to showcase the Continental’s new sculpted, athletic body and powerful styling lines.

The Continental GT was the first Bentley completely designed under Volkswagen ownership and definitely it changed the direction of the brand. That was 2003 though, there was a very light refresh in 2005, but aside from several special editions and a high-performance model, the car’s been relatively untouched, until now.

Mercedes-Benz, as partial of the partnership with Tesla Motors, will furnish 500 battery-powered E-Cell versions of the A-Class, introducing a car during a Paris Motor Show in October. Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, formed a partnership with Tesla last year to help accelerate the development of electric vehicles. In the case of the A-Class E-Cell, Tesla is to supply its battery pack and controller technology, which will be shipped to the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant in Germany where the A-Class model is built.

The vehicle, which will go on sale from early next year, will have a range of 124 miles (200 km) and will have performance equivalent to or slightly faster than the gas versions of the A-Class, said the report. E-Cel A-Class has an about 40 kilowatt-hour battery container, with rounded off 4,000 particular cells.

Only 500 of E-Cell Mercedes-Benz A-Class will be produced, with further details set to be revealed on September 15. No markets have been announced but a US launch is unlikely considering the A-Class model was never sold locally and would need to meet government standards for safety.
