For $165,000 you can rent the Grand Astor Suite at the Plaza Hotel – for one month. This price makes this approximately 5,087 square feet fifth-floor apartment the most expensive apartment in the history of Manhattan. The Astor Suite is listed with Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate.
Situated on the most coveted corner of the building, where it faces both Central Park and Fifth Avenue, luxury apartment includes all kinds of uncomfortable-looking furniture such as a velour sofa in the living room, chairs covered in fleur de lys-type pattern, and a tufted love seat in the bedroom.
The next nearest property to this would be the Cole Porter suite at the Waldorf Towers, which is $150,000-a-month. It’s a little bit larger, and a has a couple more bedrooms, but it doesn’t have the views and it doesn’t have the history, said broker Melanie Lazenby of Prudential Douglas Elliman.
The suite has been home to the likes of President John F. Kennedy, the Vanderbilt family and the Astors. It is currently owned by Jurgen Friedrich (boss of Espirit in Europe) who purchased it for $25 million in 2007.
The suite just underwent a two years multimillion-dollar renovation by renowned designer Steven Gambrel, who scouted the great estates of Europe for inspiration. He has furnished this smart home with a new HVAC system with humidifiers for the in-house artworks. There is also a Savant system that allows residents to adjust lights, temperature, music and the television by using an iPad. The owner spent millions on furnishings and art, said Lazenby.
