Royal wedding dress to go on public displayKate Middleton wowed the crowds on Friday when she appeared in the intricately decorated wedding dress designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen. It was the most anticipated dress of the century, and now the public could get the chance to see it up close. The dress is expected to become one of the capital’s biggest tourist draws.
It is not known exactly when or where it will appear. Possible venues include the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace, which open to the public in the summer, or Hampton Court Palace, where a team from the Royal School of Needlework helped in its creation. The Victoria & Albert Museum, which has a world-renowned fashion department, is also a consideration. A Clarence House spokesman said: The Duchess of Cambridge is considering a number of options to give members of the public the opportunity to see, close-up, the skilled British craftsmanship that went into the making of her wedding dress by Sarah Burton and her team as well as the Royal School of Needlework.
Barely five hours after Kate began her drive to Westminster Abbey to marry Prince William, a family tailoring firm in London had put the final touches to a replica of her wedding dress.
(AFP – LONDON) – The Alexander McQueen gown worn by the new Duchess of Cambridge was one of the highlights of the royal wedding and copies are expected to be made across the world. But the bride may have been surprised at how fast the work began. As soon as she was in the car, we started to identify what the lace was like and try to find as close a copy as possible, said Raul Echeverria, owner of Alterations Boutique in Marylebone.
When she stepped out of the Rolls-Royce in front of the abbey a few minutes later, revealing the full Alexander McQueen gown of ivory satin and lace, the team went into overdrive. We looked at the pictures on the television screen and once we identified what fabric we required, then we went to our suppliers and tried to match the fabrics, Echeverria told AFP.
