Elizabeth Gilbert, writer of the best-selling memoir “Eat, Pray, Love” has now launched a marketing campaign to try and sell her home. Her Frenchtown home in New Jersey appears on a dedicated website called ‘Eat, Pray, Crib,’ that has a tagline styled after that of her book – “One woman’s journey to sell her house” posted to YouTube on Saturday. The four-bedroom home at 3 Reading Avenue will soon hit the market asking $999,000. The house was built by the great grandson of John Reading, the first governor of New Jersey and is done up with all sorts of exotic stuff (the bathroom has exotic Tunisian mosaics that Gilbert imported in her suitcase!)
It is crowned by a copper roof and a 1,400-square-foot “Skybrary” takes the place of an attic — the spot where Gilbert wrote her bestseller. On the opposite end, a terra-cotta Brazilian honeycomb holds 500 wine bottles in the basement. The home, which boasts a kitchen with a wood-burning stove, powder room with an automated Japanese toilet/bidet and a Balinese lava stone sink, also comes with three quarters of an acre, valley and river views. A wraparound porch with Brazilian plank floors rounds out the pad.
Gilbert has lived in the home for six years with her husband, José Nunes – the Brazilian importer she met in Bali on her East, Pray, Love odyssey – and their dog Rocky. When they moved into the place it was just a giant empty attic. But “The Signature of All Things” author brought out all her creativity to create the private space and even wrote the book there.
“It was the most expensive place in town back when I bought it, but it always has been,” Gilbert told the times of the pad. “It and its twin next door were built to be the grandest homes in town.”
