Van Cleef & Arpels showcased the new version of the Cadenas watch at the 2015 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie. With its distinctive design from the 30s, the Cadenas watch is among the Maison’s iconic creations. The cadenas, or “lock” in French, is a strong symbol of union and alliance between two families or two individuals. Legend has it that the Duke or Duchess of Windsor originally suggested this concept for the watch. Since then, it has been a permanent feature in our timepiece collections.
A symbol of sentimental attachment in the image of its clasp, this year’s watch is said to have been inspired – like the Zip necklace – by the Duchess of Windsor.
Thanks to its special design, it can be worn like a bracelet. In its jeweled versions, it glitters like a diamond. The 2015 edition of this iconic piece incorporates changes to the dial, the stone setting and the clasp.
The watch’s readability is enhanced by enlarging, slightly, its oblong dial and applying 12-hour markers to the crystal cover, making it easier to read.
The original double snake chain bracelet remains, as does the hoop of the ‘lock’, carefully considered to soften the graphic edge of the dial. The clasp is also updated, with two small ceramic beads inserted to make a more secure fastening.
Nine new Cadenas models have been launched in white, yellow and rose gold, with or without diamonds or pink sapphires and on an alligator strap or a gold bracelet. There’s also an option for personalization. If you want Van Cleefe & Arpels can engrave a personal message on the hidden part of the clasp.
