A white linen bag containing traces of dust from the Moon was sold last night at Sotheby’s auction in New York for $1,8 million. A small collection bag with zipper was used by astronaut Neil Armstrong during the first manned mission to the moon in 1969. But this historic bag from the Apollo-11 mission was originally wrongly identified as irrelevant, so it was sold at one auction of various items on the Internet, and NASA then struggled to return it.

In December a federal judge ruled that it legally belonged to a Chicago-area woman who bought it in 2015 for $995.
Sotheby’s declined to identify the seller.
