Rolls-Royce 102EX Phantom Experimental Electric Car
Rolls-Royce will take a big step towards bringing to market an electric vehicle, debuting an electric version of its flagship Phantom model at the Geneva Motor Show in just over a weeks time. Called 102EX (EX stands for experimental), the fully electric powered car is planned by Rolls-Royce as a test platform for a possible future electrification of the range. The model will become, historically, the first EV (Electric Vehicle) intended for the high-end luxury segment of the automotive industry.
Essentially a Phantom 102EX is a test bed which will be used to gather feedback about consumer acceptance of alternative powertrains. As part of this process, VIPs (owners, enthusiasts, and members of the press) will get the opportunity to test drive the car at a number of locations in Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East. The full technical specifications for the electric Rolls are still under embargo and will be releases prior to the Geneva Motor Show.
The most regal of luxury brands maintains that this car will not see production, but that it is designed to create a debate about whether pure luxury and EVs can coexist. To help frame the conversation, Rolls-Royce has launched a new website Electric Luxury as a place to debate EVs in the luxury segment, while delivering updates on the car’s journey.
