Three Pieces of Rothschild’s Jewellery Sells for $2.85 million

Following hot on the heels of the royal wedding hatwalk, three pieces of jewellery owned by Hannah de Rothschild were sold for a combined total of £1,738,500 ($2.85 million) at Wednesday’s Important Jewel Sale at Christie’s auction house.

Born into the powerful Rothschild family, Hannah reputedly became the country’s richest woman when her father died in 1874, leaving her the then-immense sum of £2 million in cash, properties including a turreted mansion in England’s Buckinghamshire, and a huge stash of jewels. She married Archibald Philip Primrose four years later, at which point she acquired the title of Countess Rosebery, and, Christie’s believes, the tiara, along with a matching brooch and bracelet.

A dazzling pearl and diamond tiara sold for $1,905,611 (£1,161,250), while the bracelet and brooch sold for $947,267 (£577,250).
