An extremely rare fancy deep-blue diamond weighing 5.30 carats has been sold for record £6.2 million ($9.49 million) at Bonham’s Fine Jewellery sale in London five days ago. “Trombino” ring, favoured by Hollywood film stars, and the epitome of fashion and innovation during the 1960s was bought by Graff Diamond, an international diamond house based in London, after an intense international bidding war.
The ring, made circa 1965 has set a new world record at auction, fetching an astonishing $1.8 million (£1.18 million) per carat, thus beating the previous world record for a blue diamond, which was $1.68 million (approximately £1 million) per carat.
“We are delighted with the price it has made,” said Jean Ghika, Director of the Bonhams Jewellery Department for the UK and Europe, after the auction. “It was a sensational stone which charmed everyone who viewed it prior to the sale. Blue diamonds, especially those over 5.00 carats, are extremely rare to see on the market and continue to be highly sought-after. We are honoured to have handled the sale of such a unique gem.”
The mid-century cushion-shaped fancy deep-blue diamond is surrounded by an additional two-carats of brilliant-cut and baguette-cut white diamonds. Fancy coloured diamonds exhibit an intense colour and are exceptionally rare, as are blue diamonds (one of the rarest diamonds on the planet).
