A rare Emerald-cut 100.2-carat perfect white diamond will lead Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels sale, scheduled for April 21 in New York. An internally flawless D color, Type IIa stone is just one of six diamonds over 100 carats and comparable-quality ever to be sold at auction. It is estimated between $19 and $25 million. “This 100.20 carat diamond is the definition of perfection. The color is whiter than white, it is free of any internal imperfections, and so transparent that I can only compare it to a pool of icy water,” said Gary Schuler, head of Sotheby’s Jewelry department in New York in a press release.
This remarkable stone came to Sotheby’s from an anonymous owner who spent over a year studying and cutting it before bringing it to the house. It was mined in southern Africa within the last 10 years and weighed over 200 carats before it was cut and polished, the auction house said.
The “Ultimate Emerald-Cut Diamond” joins an elite group of just five comparable quality diamonds, all over 100 carats in weight and D-color, Internally Flawless/Flawless clarity, pear-shape/rectangular-brilliant/oval-brilliant cut diamonds, that was sold for staggering amounts at Sotheby’s/Christies auctions since year 1990.
