What do you get when mix Scotch and surfing? Nothing comes to mind. And when one thinks of fine whiskey and hand-crafted surfboards, they might never think that these two worlds could ever overlap.
Well, Legendary whiskey maker Glenmorangie and American manufacturer of wooden surfboards Grain Surfboards teamed up to to achieve this unusual combination. And, the result is a limited series of surfboards made from what were once whisky casks. Each surfboard uses wood from 12 Glenmorangie oak staves, as well as Grain’s signature material, Maine-grown northern white cedar and reclaimed western red cedar.

“Using wood from Glenmorangie casks enabled us to make a board that’s very light but very strong. It’s built to meet the demands of some of the best surfers in the world, as well as being a board that anyone can enjoy the waves on,” Grain Surfboards founder Mike LaVecchia said in a statement. “It’s incredible that you can take a piece of wood that’s already worked hard and then give it a new life as something absolutely beautiful.”
Apparently, Glenmorangie only uses their casks twice, to produce a “smoother and more rounded taste.” The finished specs of the board 6’11 3/4″ x 20 1/8″ x 2-3/16″, and the volume–surprisingly–is 39.96 L. The site also explains that the board builders were able to make the entire interior framework using the recycled oak staves, replacing marine plywood that is commonly used in similar wooden planks.
Each board is priced at $5,500.
