Fancy Mercedes, Lexus, or Land Rover, diamond encrusted Rolex and even extinct species of cat in golden basket are obviously too ordinary for an oil-rich empire. A businessman from UAE has paid AED18 million or €4.34 million at auction for a licence plate bearing just the number “1”.
“My ambition is to be always number one,” said Arif Ahmed al-Zarouni after getting your precious tuition.

You may be surprised to hear that this mind-blowing sum isn’t the highest that’s been paid in the UAE. Back in 2008, then-25-year-old businessman Saeed al-Khouri, who paid a staggering AED52.2 million (€12.5 million) for the number 1 plate in Abu Dhabi
The Emirate of Dubai has been home to some of the most expensive license plate auctions in the world and the cars that these license plates usually appear on aren’t even worth a tenth of the value of the selling price at auction. The plates are so expensive and people don’t mind shelling out millions of dollars because it is way for them to show their status symbol within the community.
