A uniform worn by American baseball legend Babe Ruth is expected to fetch a whopping $500,000 when it hits the auction block in November.
Babe Ruth Brooklyn Dodgers coaching uniform was worn by him during the 1938 season and it is without doubt one of the top highlights in the sale. Recently, a Babe Ruth New York Yankees road jersey dating from 1928-30 sold for $5.64 million, breaking the record for the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold. The market for celebrity sports items is one of the fastest growing alternative investment sectors in the auction world.
Babe Ruth – a.k.a the ‘Sultan of Swat’ or ‘The Great Bambino’ – is widely considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time, so no wonder why this uniform is the equivalent of the Holy Grail for baseball fans.
Other sports-related items which will be offered at Julien’s Auctions Sports Legends Memorabilia Event on November 14 include a baseball signed by Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe, who were briefly married, and a pair of Muhammad Ali boxing shorts from 1980 with a handwritten message that reads: “Service to others is the rent we pay for our room here on Earth.”
